The Polestar 3 has broken a new Guinness World Record for the longest single-charge journey of an electric SUV, the company announced last week. Polestar’s large electric SUV has achieved 581.3 miles on a single drive, defining a new benchmark for the segment.
According to the managing director at Polestar UK Matt Galvin, the record-breaking journey showcases how much the battery range has improved over the years, and the assumption that EVs can’t go long is a becoming a thing of the past. CEO Michael Lohscheller emphasizes that the Polestar 3 is setting new standards, pushing the boundaries of technology and electric performance, he said in the company press release.
According to Polestar, the vehicle’s battery range lasted for 22 hours and 57 minutes, coping with varied weather conditions and achieving 19.5 kWh /100 miles of efficiency. Professional efficiency drivers Kevin Booker, Sam Clarke, and Richard Parker completed the run, switching drivers every three hours in the record-breaking effort.
The Polestar 3 reached a WLTP range of 706 km and still had 20% of its battery capacity. Even when the battery hit zero, the vehicle delivered an extra eight miles before reaching the charger. The journey was monitored by Guinness judge Paulina Sapinska. The run data included video footage, GPS, and odometer readings and was verified by Webfleet. The car completed the drive without any modifications and had 20-inch wheels with standard Michelin Sport 4 EV tires.
This impressive achievement shows the long-range potential of EVs and the strength of Polestar’s technology. While the average driver isn’t a professional efficiency driver pushing their car to the limit, that doesn’t mean this record-setting effort doesn’t relate to them. Range concerns are a constant point of criticism in the EV market, and strides being made in this environment can help EVs become a more viable option for the average consumer.
The Polestar lineup has three models: Polestar 2, Polestar 3, and Polestar 4, with three planned models yet to come. Polestar entered the EV market in 2019, challenging established EV carmakers in the growing market. With a focus on premium experiences, the Swedish company’s cars are available in 28 markets across Europe. Asia Pacific, and North America.
